Our Story

About R W Knight & Son

Fifty years of family-run stove expertise — from a single Jøtul brought home to a Wiltshire farmhouse in 1974, to the South West’s leading stove specialists today.

How it all began

Dick and Mary Knight bought a Jøtul wood stove from Norway to heat their draughty farm house in 1974. At the time in England the concept of burning wood instead of coal was unheard of. They decided on the stove after seeing a leaflet which was written in Norwegian at the Royal Welsh show, where the family were showing their Hampshire Down sheep. The stove changed the feel of the house and made them enthuse to anyone and everyone as to how good the stove was.

"The stove changed the feel of the house."

— Dick & Mary Knight, 1974

Featured in Farmers Weekly

The farmers weekly published an article in 1975 about a museum Dick had opened which at this time was unusual for farmers to have other ventures.

Reporters from the farmers weekly came to interview Dick and thawed out in front of the Jøtul stove. This then led to a picture in the magazine of Mary stoking the stove, explaining the efficiency compared to an open fire. This was the first wood stove article published in England. This picture led to a large number of enquiries (40 a day at its peak) and so they started supplying stoves to the public, despite the initial reluctance to go into retail.

From farming to stoves

More and more time was being spent selling stoves instead of farming and on the museum. The extra income meant the farm could be run traditionally without sprays and fertilizer to keep the fields as meadows with lots of wild flowers and the historical buildings could be left.

Gradually the business expanded and they started selling a couple of other leading manufacturers stoves, which are still sold today. Now 50 years on Dick’s son Henry runs the business, dealing with these established premier manufacturers and have the confidence that the products supplied will be a benefit to customers and give many years of reliable service.

Dick sadly passed away on the 20th of January 2024 at the age of 92. This was made more poignant as the company he founded in 1974 celebrated 50 years.

Meet the team

The faces behind the fire

Henry

Managing Director, the ‘Son’ in R W Knight & Son.

Henry has lived and breathed fires since he was 12 years old and his father started selling Jotul stoves from the family living room on the farm. He has always lived and worked for the family farming and stove business straight from school, gaining hands-on experience over the years.

Miriam

Finance and Accounts. Henry’s daughter, and recently a director.

Miriam finished university in 2014 with a business degree and joined the family business. Her dissertation was written on the woodburning stove industry! She does lots behind the scenes to keep everything ticking over.

Becky

Showroom and office manager.

Becky joined us with a retail background in 2018, but with no knowledge of stoves and look at her now! She makes sure the team are organised and everything runs smoothly.

Jon

Technical department.

Jon comes from an engineering background but has now worked for the business for over 30 years!! Hats off to him! He is sometimes found in the showroom, sometimes found in the warehouse, sometimes visiting customers. He is your man if you have a complicated flue enquiry.

Alan

Spares department.

Alan started here in 2002 after living in Japan. He grew up in Marshfield and worked for a local website company before Knight Stoves. He now manages our Jotul Group Spares website orders from enquiry to delivery.

Darren

Office and Showroom.

Darren is a keen foodie and quizzer. He is a key member of staff in the office and showroom; he deals with all types of enquiries that come in and is often the first face you see.

Jay

Warehouse department.

Jay has worked here since 2007. He is often buried in the warehouse checking incoming and outgoing orders, making sure everything is ready to complete an order. He also paints stoves to alternative colours within our spray booth. Jay is a keen musician and semi-professional bass player.

Mark

Engineer and fabricator.

Mark used to fit stoves, so understands everything about stove installations. He is a great metal fabricator and makes bespoke items such as chimney register plates, hearth plates, heat shields, log stores, and our show unit! He also rebuilds stoves and refurbishes customers’ stove doors.

Shelley

Office and showroom.

Shelley has recently joined our team and has quickly learnt about stoves, coming from a high-end local clothes shop. She has worked in retail since she was 15 and is always on hand to help customers with their enquiries and find a suitable stove or fire.

Crystal

Office and showroom.

Crystal has recently joined us and swiftly picked up all things stove and fire related. She is able to guide customers to a product that will best suit their needs.

Caroline

Office and showroom.

Caroline worked for us many moons ago, originally doing the accounts. She returned in 2015 and has been an enthusiastic showroom colleague ever since. She will always go out of her way to help customers find the best solution for their home.
